I feel like I have had a long drink from the water hose; 3 very fast hours of class have provided information saturation and refreshment. I enjoyed the imagery of "Climbing The Wall". Teamwork is indeed a major key for success. I found myself reflecting on past student trips to Tim Horton's camp with the Learning Centre at my school. Student encouragement and team work allowed many to experience success, in things as vast as taking a shower independently, building a campfire, going on the giant swing in pairs or rock climbing in teams. I feel I have a lot to learn from this course and look forward to working together with others to accomplish that goal.
There were several terms and apps today that I had never heard of. I was not familiar with either the HAAT framework or SETT framework. but both looked helpful to have available as a flowchart for assisting decisions around AT. It certainly seems that the SSRSB has some functional systems for supporting student success that are admirable. The video on Aidan showing EYE GAZE could have been useful with a student I had two years ago. I had never seen EYE GAZE implemented; it was indeed eye opening,
I found that working together with the course actively to explain a key AAC term or concept as well as demonstration of the apps and websites to explain made the class fly by and that I have an immediate takeaway. I feel that as a resource teacher, I'd be able to take the Tellagami app directly to students to work with. I have a selective mute student who is on my caseload and she may find the app very useful for doing class presentations. I appreciated the ability to change the character and the ease at which the app worked overall.
I felt that since several members of the class had difficulty uploading to SHOWBIE, we had a built in reminder that high tech can have some challenges, but staying calm and looking at working together can also be a way of working as a team. I look forward to what the course will have to offer over the next 3 weeks and feel there are definitely take aways I can apply directly to my teaching practice.

Joanne,
ReplyDeleteI shared a number of your "take a ways" from today, first and foremost, SSRSB appears to be much more comfortable with available assistive technologies. I do find I have to continuously remind myself that students are using these platforms and are in turn capable of some amazing work.
Thank you, John for your response. It lets me know my blog is working :) Hopefully we will each go back to our respective jobs with some new competencies that benefit student success.
DeleteHi Joanne,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your thoughts on Day 1. Always the toughest day! I also really enjoyed using the Tellagami app. So much so, that we chose to use it during our presentation, even though we weren't required to. It's just a fun, interactive way to show what you know!
Cheers,
Chris
Thanks, Chris. I enjoyed your Tellagami presentation. There are so many varieties of "presenters" available. I hope the students we each teach will be able to apply this to presentations themselves.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joanne for sharing your thoughts. I too love Tellegami. There are so many ways to use this app and I think any student, including your student who is selectively mute, might also enjoy it's unique powers for sharing his/her knowledge. It certainly is fun and engaging and might certainly take away some of the anxiety of verbal exchange.
